Day 57
Sunday

This morning we returned to the Mandalay Ward for church in hopes of seeing Brother Bolanga again. We had a wonderful Fast and Testimony meeting followed by a beautiful gospel essentials class for the investigators. Our Relief Society and Elders Quorum was really filled with the spirit and you can sense the sacrifices everyone here is making. The Elders Quorum really broke down the essential element for the quorum to come together is to know each other. Extend your hand and get to know the people in the ward. When you feel the love of others you can get closer to Christ.

This ward was asked to supply the choir for the Stake Conference next weekend. They have to arrange for a special taxi to get everyone there which is a challenging cost for the ward choir members.

Sister Courtright came home and zonked out which we believe was because she took her medication twice this morning by accident. And the double dose of blood pressure medicine probably slowed her down considerably.

We watched a YouTube special on the history of South Africa to get to know this area better. It was really informative regarding how the early history of the people developed here. It showed the tribal development (San, Xhosa, Zulu, Khoi) and their struggles and the Foretrekkers (Dutch) moving into the interior away from the British conquerors. It discussed the two free states that the Foretrekkers settled and how the Transvaal state was forcefully taken by the British during the Boer wars (1902) to take ownership of the gold mines there. This led to a very poor white population to become known as Africaners contending for jobs with the lower-cost coloreds employed in the mining industry. The subsequent white take over of the parliament in that area generated new rules and regulations moving more of the desired jobs to whites only. This was the beginning of the separation of classes known as Apartheid. We'll learn more in the next segments of the documentary.
