Cape Town Mission Field

 9 April 2019
  Day 486
Tuesday

Today we took the Firth's and the West's sightseeing. We headed to Simon's town to see the penguins then we headed for the Cape of Good Hope. There were some strong winds blowing down at the cape. We took the rail car up to the light house. There were some baboons sitting at the turnstile and also in the courtyard at the top of the rail car stop. We also saw some Elands in the open grass just below the parking lot. We stopped for pictures down at the beach where the Cape of Good Hope sign is. The seas were impressive. We then headed back north and stopped for lunch at the Hub Cafe. This was a delightful spot and the food was terrific, yellow tail tuna; mmmm. We headed down to the beach below the cafe because we saw some impressive surf. We got out and walked around a bit and took some pictures. Sister Courtright was out on a rock outcropping. We then noticed a pretty good sized wave coming in so she got down and started heading for the dune and we noticed the surf was coming up fast so we began to run. Sister Courtright slowed down a bit as Elder Courtright noticed it was still continuing to rise so he kept going. As he looked back to see if Sister Courtright was still coming he saw an alarmed expression on her face looking down the beach so he turned to look and saw a wall of water clear up to the dune now come down the beach sideways towards them. Elder Courtright picked up the speed and made it to the boardwalk just as it rolled by. Sister Courtright ran to the dune to brace herself in the event she needed to catch 3 people that were rolling by. Elder Courtright turned around to see Elder West laying on his side holding himself up with one hand while he extended his other hand straight into the air holding onto this expensive Nikon camera. We helped the 3 people up and the one girl desperately began looking for her backpack that had her GoPro and drivers license in it. We never found it. This rogue wave was something else. We were just glad the 2 young boys who were out on the rocks also left the beach a few seconds before it hit.
I switched phones so my pictures are on the other phone so I'm including some photos that Elder West took.

Which way is North? Up, right? North is always up on the map.

Just after the rogue wave hit, the main part hit to the left of us and rolled across the dune from left to right up against the grassy dune. These three people went swimming along with Elder West. Sister Firth came running back to assist.
