Up at 4:30 and Fiona fixed us some nice muffin's, pancakes, and hot chocolate for our trip to Hluhluwe today. We left at 5:00 am and we were taken by Toco again today with one other couple from Italy. We spent most of the day on the northern side while stopping for breakfast and lunch. We saw Elephant, Rhino, Giraffe, Water Buffalo, Lion, Crocodile, Bushbuck, Kudu, Impala, Vultures, Monkeys, and a host of birds. Most notable was an elephant and 3 rhino's that we go very close to. The two male Lion's were sleeping the day away while to females with their grown cubs were on the march looking for something to help train the hunting skills of their young ones. The vultures were huge. We saw a mother bird that looked somewhat like a Quail walk here newborn chicks across the road. And judging by their size and difficulty walking we believe they were just hatched.
We grabbed a quick bite for dinner then were picked up by the tour guide at 7:00 pm along with a couple from Germany for a night drive through the park. We had some extra bright lights on the front and two portable spot lights. We saw Hippo, Rhino, Kudu, Bushbuck, Impala, Dika, and even a mongoose. Just as we were leaving it started to rain a bit but the lighting was more impressive. It must be coming down pretty good near us but were not getting the brunt of the storm, just a lot of thunder and lightning.
Difficult to see, but we found a pack of African Wild Dogs. The large male was sleepy here with the young ones just over the hilltop. They are endangered and only about 3000 exist.
Male Nyala with several females
Monkeys enjoying the Marula Tree leaves
Old male Cape Buffalo, one of the dugger boys. Dugger is muddy in Zulu. The old males get kicked out and join the bachelors who love to roll around in the mud and get looking nasty.
Two male Lion's snoozing the day away
Two female Lions teaching their young to hunt
Enjoying a lovely Braai with Toco who prepared steaks and boervoors, mmmmm!
The white thing on the far side of the river is a crocodile basking in the sun
Impala
Chameleon spotted by the guide on the night safari. It shows up as a lime green against the background of the trees he's on. That's how he is able to find them at night.
