Day 326
Wednesday
Happy Halloween (in the states)! We saw a few Halloween decorations in the stores but not much happens around here, especially no trick or treating, it would be too dangerous.
We had Elder Barbre and Elder Lawer come into the office to help us out since they can't proselyte due to Elder Barbre's sore ankle. They were very helpful for Sister Courtright's calendar updates and also scanning in old housing lease records then shredding them so we can go all digital.
We finally left the office around 2:30 pm to head to George. Elder Bullman indicated that the fires had subsided enough that the road to Port Elizabeth was open and that we could caravan there on Thursday. We drove the Ford Ranger due to our car still being used by the Mandalay elders while their car is still be repaired at the body shop.
There was some beautiful farm country on the way to George. Rolling hills that had just been harvested (wheat) and many areas had large windmills. It reminded us a lot of the Iowa landscape. While driving through Caledon we found an oldies radio station and listened to Bill Haley and Buddy Holly and others on our drive. When we arrived in George it was very smokey and it tasted like you were right next to a campfire. It was difficult sleeping at the bed-n-breakfast because of the smoke. Elder Bullman said that during the past 10 days about 16,000 acres in the hills around George have burned.
