Day 566
Friday
We picked up the Blaser's and Firth's for a drive to Franshoek today. It was rainy and windy but we ventured forward. We first stopped at Vergenoegd Winery built in 1773. It was in the Fauer family for six generations until 2 years ago when it was sold when the family ran into financial difficulty. They have a special event where they run 1200 Indian Ducks, along with a few other types and some geese, through the grounds and back to the lake. They use them for bug control in the vineyard during the summer months. The ducks stand tall and are thin and don't fly due to their genetically short wings. It was a fun site and for no reason at all we were truly amused by this simple but crazy event. We then were given a tour of the old estate that is under going some renovation up front. In the back we entered through the slave door, where the door knob is very low to the ground, ensuring that the slaves bowed down to the master of the vineyard even before entering into the house. They have some beautiful old furniture pieces and painting on the wall, even some portraits of the original Fauer family members.
We then drove to Stellenbosch and looked at a potential boarding for the Somerset West elders. We then went to the University Botanical Gardens and had some lunch then walked through the grounds. We left and drove up through Hell's Gate to Franschoek. We drove through town then drove around the back side of town then headed back to Cape Town.
We stopped at the Tableview Elders and picked up some cheese cake that Elder Gamble made for us. It was very good. We looked through the boarding and were amazed at the amount of effort Elder Farer took to scrub down the mold from the back bedroom walls, window sills, and ceiling. He did a great job!
We then picked up pizza and went back to the Firth's for pizza and cheese cake. We stopped to view the zone leaders apartment and the Langa 1 elders flat. It was very dirty and Sister Courtright had a heart to heart talk with Elder Dennis to encourage him to stick with it even though it was a problem he inherited.
